At Icon Interiors, we often use contemporary chandeliers as a focal point in our lighting schemes. The chandeliers can define a particular area, such as a dining table or as a centrepiece in a bedroom. This beautifully designed hook is from the Essey range of products, and continues their quirky design ethos of symbolic functionalism, with products often based on stories and fables.

Ferdinand the bull is a quiet, peace loving young bull who only wants to spend his time under a cork tree smelling the flowers. But, when a bee stings him, the townspeople believe he is ferocious and take him to the bullring! He refuses to fight and is taken back to the cork tree to once again smell the flowers. Ferdinand teaches us to appreciate the simple things in life and to be ourselves.

The Ferdinand design is a simple continuous line from one horn, through the eye, round the nose ring and back again to the other horn creating a functional double coat hook for hanging clothes. One line – one soul. The Ferdinand story is based on a 1938 classic story by Munro Leaf & Robert Lawson.

E for Essential...

At Icon Interiors, we are always looking for edgy design products, and recently discovered the quirky home wares supplier called Essey. Essey (derived from essential) is about Symbolic Functionalism, and was founded around the concept of using symbolism or metaphors to promote a given function or the inner nature of an object. It is about giving objects a soul, an identity and letting them communicate this - ie Let the products speak for themselves.

This concept is embodied in the Illusion range of tables, which are simple and functional. Based on observing an outdoor cafe with draped table cloths, the designers then sought a way of producing the essence of drapery with modern materials. We are indulging in a little nostalgia today, as we revisit our very first project for a photo shoot. The interior design scheme for this project is now over 8 years old, and we organised the photo shoot to prove the point that good design lasts, and never goes out of style.

The drawing room walls are rendered with ebony and ivory marmorino (polished plaster). This is a mixture of

marble dust and lime mortar, with an amazing lacquer style finish.

The John Cullen Lighting system is designed to create a soft glow of ambient light, with gentle scallops of light highlighting artwork, soft furnishings and sculpture. The decorative lighting by Baker furniture frames the sofas covered in ivory merino wool.

Charles Lutyens - Outraged Christ Sculpture

At Icon Interiors, we are constantly looking at the art world for inspiration, and this powerful installation by Charles Lutyens at St Paul's Church Bow Common in London is an inspiring piece of work.

Named the “Outraged Christ”, this wooden sculpture of Christ crucified stands 15ft tall and is made of soft and hard ‘found’ wood beams and planks, split by axe and intuitively applied to the body of the sculpture by drilling and dowelling, using a construction adhesive and shaped largely by chainsaw and broad chisel.

Lutyens created the head 30 years ago and held its image and intent in his mind for most of this time. 5 years ago he began to explore the sculpture further.

More generally Crucifixions depict suffering, wounded or dead, ‘sleeping’, sweet and beautiful or apparently forgiving Christs. However, in the course of work Lutyens’ sculpture has grown into an “Outraged Christ”. For him this interpretation is significant and relevant for our present times, and resonates particularly with the question “what are we doing”?

Yastik is a new boutique selling exclusively luxury cushions has just opened off Kensington High Street, London. A contemporary display of over 150 cushions with over 100 designs takes you into a world of riotous patterns and colour.

Yastik (which means cushion in Turkish), was created in Turkey five years ago from the collaboration between Rifat Ozbek and Erdal Karaman. The collection is designed with exotic and beautiful fabrics that Ozbek has collected over the years from his travels around the world. Each design is produced as a limited edition and each season brings a new collection.

The collection includes a mix of cotton and silk fabrics and velvets. The designs include vintage, new and custom-made mainly from Central Asia. They are all hand died, hand loomed and hand printed. The hand-embroidered Suzani fabrics are made to Ozbek’s selection of old Ottoman patterns. The cushions are truly bespoke and sizes follow the patterns which means that the range includes over 15 sizes of squares and rectangles.

Iconic Design at Harrods

Christopher Guy's iconic designs can now be found in a spectacular new showroom at Harrods. These overscale designs are perfect for the proportions of Victorian and Georgian Houses, and give a quirky twist to any interior design scheme.

At Icon Interiors, we have used this tall chairs in a dramatic hallway, teamed with italian chandeliers and bespoke rugs.

Composition is key when arranging furniture, and we often use this 'pyramid' formation of two tall chairs, with a central console and large mirror or painting to bring the whole composition together.

We like to view each room elevation as a separate view, and consider balance and proportion for each wall. This furniture has an Alice in Wonderland quality because of its huge proportions, and is an iconic statement for any interior design project.

Voyage Enfants

We were recently contacted by a client to check if we could decorate a young teenager's bedroom. The client had become frustrated at limited options offered in the high street, and her daughter had outgrown the ubiquitous princess themed bedrooms.

We suggested the Voyage Enfants range of fabrics, which contain appliqued fabrics with fashion motifs in muted peacock blues and fuchsia.

To work with the craftwork/vintage trend, there are also hotpotch style fabrics with patchwork flowers and florals. We suggest keeping the walls in simple neutral colours such as Farrow and Ball All White, and using the soft furnishings to add splashes of colour.

For older teenagers, other fabric ranges by Voyage Boutique may also appeal, as they have an artisitic/painterly quality to them, continuing the vintage style theme with Baboushka motifs. Additional colour can be added by high gloss lacquer painted furniture.

The Couture collection takes inspiration from the

catwalk, with embellished silks and linens, finished with swarovski crystals. The soft voiles are textured like origami, and fabrics are embossed to create texture.

The Lorient Studio Line collection takes inspiration from impressionist

An Aga Saga...

One of the interesting parts of our interior design business at Icon Interiors, is working with clients to design a bespoke kitchen. Our painted kitchens can be styled with contemporary stainless steel fittings or be transformed into a country style kitchen by including traditional items such as an Aga or a Rayburn.

These traditional ovens can be fuelled by a variety of sources, such as gas, oil and wood burning - they can also be converted to electrical supply, which can be an attractive option given recent oil price rises. It also is possible to re-engineer solid fuel cookers to run on oil or gas, and vice versa. It is also possible to switch between fuel types. Lately, there has been an increasing demand for electric AGA cookers running off a simple 13 amp circuit. AGA Twyford in conjunction with AGA Rangemaster Ltd., are in the forefront of this technology and can offer fully authorized on site conversions as

At Icon Interiors many of our designs are influenced by our travels and we incorporate these experiences into our decorating philosophy. We often include oriental elements into our designs, with influences from japan and china inherent within each room, by the use of decorative furniture, grass paper and artworks.

Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, these designs are simple and balanced. Wabi-Sabi is a way of making things according to the Buddhist principle of being true to materials. A complex aesthetic, it is a combination of rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness (wabi), together with the beauty and serenity of age, where an object acquires a patina or repairs due to prolonged use (sabi).

The principles of wabi are linked to those of shihui and ideas of refined austerity, all of which aspire to the ideal of creating simple objects free of unnecessary distraction. Evidence of how the material was worked is a way of showing the 'hand of the maker' and imperfections and irregularities are welcomed as a link between the natural and human worlds, as perfection is rarely found in nature.

Interpreting the Cult of Beauty...

We continue our theme of the Cult of Beauty, and how this aesthetic

movement can be interpreted using modern suppliers. The essence of the aesthetic movement encapsulates the theory of Art for Art's Sake, and these beautiful hand painted wallpapers by De Gournay are both wall covering and artwork.

The floral motif designs are drawn from the naturalistic style of this movement, whilst embracing influences from chinese and japanese design. The bespoke quality of these papers allow our clients to have panels created exactly to suit a particular room.

THE HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

The world of interiors is currently inspired by The Cult of Beauty Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2 April to 17 July 2011).

The Cult of Beauty is the first major exhibition to capture the essence of Aestheticism, exploring an artistic movement which sought to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Victorian era by creating a new kind of art and beauty. This artistic movement encompassed artists, designers and poets, and explores how they promoted the idea of ‘art for art’s sake. This myriad of artistic influences would greatly affect how domestic interior design evolved for the middle class home, with the notion of ‘The House Beautiful’ as an embodiment of cultured living.

The collaboration between artists and designers continues today, and in the UK, we are fortunate enough to have our own quiet design revolution adhering to the principles of the Cult of Beauty. Hence, it is possible to recapture the essence of Aestheticism, yet reinterpret the original design ideas for contemporary living.

Influenced by natural motifs, classical art, Japanese and Indian design, Cole and Son have been manufacturing wallpaper since 1875. The Cole & Sonarchive consists of approximately 1,800 block print designs, 350 screenprint designs and a huge quantity of original drawings and wallpapers, representing all the styles from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Amongst these are some of the most important historic wallpaper designs in the world.

The large scale floral motif of this ‘magnolia’ design, with its simple background, has a contemporary edge and would work well as a feature wall. Quadro, New Quadro...

At Icon Interiors, we are often asked by clients to balance classical designs with contemporary interiors. A perfect solution to this dilemma is to adapt traditional cabinet making techniques to a modular format, and accessorise with luxury finishes.

This Quadro system by Annibale Colombo is hand made in their Milan workshop, and yet each 'square' forms a modular arrangement which can be adapted to suit any space. The designs can be in cherry wood, with additional touches such as leather, macassar ebony or lalique motifs to ensure that each piece is truly bespoke.

Established over 200 years ago, Annibale Colombo was founded in Brianza during the period when the nobility from the nearby Milan, in love with the refined tastes of XVIII century France, commissioned reproductions of the furniture made by the great cabinet-makers in the recent bygone years. Thus giving great impetus to the already existing, though not yet refined, local traditions. We can now access these skills for modern commissions on behalf of our clients.

When employing an interior designer, clients should always have access to a much broader range of design resources, both in the UK and worldwide. At Icon Interiors, we are always looking to expand our offerings to clients, and go on frequent sourcing trips to Europe.

During our recent trip to Milan, we discovered these beautiful crystal lighting designs by Marchetti. The traditional crystals are now being used in contemporary ways with iconic shapes and futuristic designs.

On the left, the Brillo floor lamps are statement pieces and can also be suspended in groups of three to form a wonderful centrepiece in an entrance hall. On the right, the Diamante pendant light is a dramatic focal point when suspended over a dining table or in a linear display in a large hallway.

The futuristic Planet pendant light is constructed with flat slivers of glass to form a spherical shape, and lifts this classic interior with its contemporary design.

Mussi in Milan...

A Jewel at Decorex 2010

Decorex is the premier interior design exhibition of the year, and one of the jewels of this year's show was Rocio Moreno's beautiful fabrics. These woven indian silks use traditional techniques as the weavers continue to work the complex technique of brocade by hand, in the same way as they were produced in the XV and XVI centuries in Venice and other eastern countries.

This type of silk cloth is loomed with a double-warp and a specially treated silk, creating its extraordinary beauty and lustrous satin finish. Today they continue weaving silks and tapestries for temples and palaces, like those of the Dalai Lama and the Nepalese royal family.

The brocade fabrics have strong indian influences and symbolism, and yet the collection also contains vibrant abstract prints, reminiscent of Rothko paintings. The fabrics can be used as traditional soft furnishings, wall hangings, artwork and for haute couture. The traditional figurative fabrics and the contemporary blocks of colour will work in both modern and traditional interiors.

The vibrancy of the colour range is a welcome change from the safe neutral designs which have become ubiquitous in UK design.

The usual themes of princesses and cars tend to be a passing phase, and can't evolve with the child as he or she grows. Our challenge is to provide beautifully made furniture which has a strong design aesthetic, and which will last for many years as multi-use pieces.

The furniture designer Il Loft - http://www.illoft.com/ - produce an elegantly designed children's collection, using an artist's colour palette, ranging from muted shades to primary colours. This round bed, called Felix Baby Letto can be adapted over time as the children grow and their needs change. At Icon Interiors, we are often asked by clients to specify lighting which is glamorous, yet contemporary, and with the option to add bespoke elements such as coloured crystal to work with the rest of the interior design scheme. These beautiful murano glass chandeliers from Italy tick all the boxes, and we are currently specifying two of this chandeliers for a dining room, and aim to team it with silver silk wallpaper, and amethyst silk curtains.

In modern interiors, the ubiquitous use of down lighters often means that decorative lights are forgotten, and yet the judicious use of statement pieces can give a design key focal points, and define areas for different uses.

Using large, decorative pieces in stairwells works particularly well, and these dramatic suspended crystal installations are key talking points, and evoke a sense of expectation for more beautiful things to come.

Contemporary Colonial...

For a current Icon Interiors' project, we are specifying these beautiful colonial style chandeliers, which are formed by successive tiers of ceramic 'ostrich eggs'. This kind of style works beautifully in an orangery or large conservatory, surrounded by ivory linen sofas and driftwood tables.

The 'antler horns' are actually made of resin, and mimic the horns of the kudu and other species of the gazelle family. These products are sourced from Bobby Breen in Cape Town, and his website http://www.bobbybreen.co.za/ shows many other examples of this african style.

The style is very much classic colonial, yet the simplicity of the design brings this look up to date, echoing styles of african and asian boutique hotels. We often team this look with woven grass papers on the walls, natural silk scatter cushions, and contemporary artwork. Mohair blankets are another export of South Africa, and work well draped over the linen sofas.

Natural Willow...

These beautiful curved willow structures created by Judith Needham - http://www.judithneedham.co.uk/ - work really well as focal points in a garden, and can be adapted as playhouses for children. Willow is a material which is annually renewable and which will gradually degrade over about 5 years, and as a renewable source of material, it is eco-friendly.

The Dreaming Spires Willow Playhouse is designed to meet the child's need for imaginative play whilst being an attractive feature in the garden in its own right. The curvy lines and arched windows give the house a fairy tale quality. The twin spires and forked flags swinging gently in the breeze put one in mind of a knight's encampment. Its ambiguous form transforms effortlessly from cottage to castle, wigwam to igloo.

At the end of its life, rather than needing to go into landfill, it can simply be recycled in your own garden. You could use the willow as kindling if you have a fire; you could put it in the compost bin or you could shred it and use it as garden mulch.

Continuing our theme of Bespoke Kitchens, we had such a great response from our previous article, and our clients and contacts asked for more details of our beautiful kitchen cabinetry. Our recent installation in Amersham has a tailor made larder, with walnut veneer shelves, bread and snack compartments. Our client runs a busy household, with two active, sports-mad boys, and the brief for the kitchen was practical but elegant.

This tall double larder opens out to allow all food stocks to be visible, and baking goods, spices and cereals are neatly arranged. This means everything is organised and accessible. The special compartments for bread and snacks are hand carved, and of course the drawers can be initialled with any name or quote.

We also like to add curves to our kitchens, which work particularly well on large islands, and this helps to soften the whole look, giving a hand made feel to the design.

French Gray, Old White and Agas...

This beautiful kitchen in Buckinghamshire has just been completed by our team. The client brief originally stipulated an uber-contemporary kitchen, but after a sourcing trip in London, and lots of discussion about the architecture of the house, we completely changed the brief to accommodate a classic/contemporary kitchen style. The client particularly liked the Aga-style of cooking, and we planned the kitchen around this feature. For the summer months, the Aga can be switched off, and a standard integrated oven is used.

The flooring is engineered oak, the worktops are ivory quartz, and the paint colours are Farrow & Ball French Gray and Old White. The walls are decorated with Farrow & Ball Clunch.

We also incorporated a wine rack and media cabient for the dining area, and paid particular attention to lighting. This side of the room now has a wonderful warm glow, and is perfect for family suppers or smart dinner parties.

From Wallpaper to Abu Dhabi...

In the interior design industry, we meet a multitude of suppliers, ranging from bespoke cabinet makers to fabric and wallpaper designers. This is part of our efforts to build a network of unique sources, to offer our clients a bespoke interior design service. We pride ourselves, where possible, in sourcing directly from the artist or supplier to gain the best deal possible for our clients.

However, nothing quite prepared us for meeting Kevin Dean, who is an artist and designer with a varied portfolio, ranging from fabric and wallpaper design to mosaics, ceramics and book illustrations.

Working with Fantini Mosaici of Milan, Kevin has created a unique floral design for the marble floor of the 18,000 sq m Sahan or courtyard in The Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi. He also designed other large floors and archways within the mosque in collaboration with the international architects Spatium, Milan.

In May 2008 Kevin showed his first collection of wallpapers at The International Contemporary Furniture Fair, New York. The English Roses collection of wallpapers is traditional/classic but the scale of the designs, the colours and materials used give the collection a very contemporary look. Kevin's designs can also be found at Liberty's in London.

Contemporary Chinoiserie...

The Chinoiserie style was at its height from 1750 to 1765, and was inspired by art and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries. In the 18th century porcelain, silk and lacquerware imported from China and Japan were extremely fashionable. This led many British designers and craftsmen to imitate Asian designs and to create their own fanciful versions of the East.

This trend of constantly re-interpreting the chinoiserie style continues to this day, with beautiful bespoke designs being offered by Fromental. The designs range from classical scenes to ornately embellished designs in regal colours.

These intricate designs work in contemporary homes when the wallpaper itself is treated as artwork, and furniture and soft furnishings should be simple and understated. The pared down designs of cherry blossom and willow trees are iconic chinese and japanese images, which suit modern interiors.

The resurgence of interest in hand crafted products and focus on the home is reflected in the emerging designs of younger textile designers. Catherine Crew's final degree show at the Winchester School of Art has an edgy, hand crafted quality, using strong motifs of domesticity. Images such as cutlery and clocks are arranged with architectural precision. The colour palette of soft blues and greys are lifted by flashes of pistachio and white.

At Icon Interiors, we are constantly looking for new sources of inspiration, especially bespoke pieces which cannot be found on the high street. After the pared down, clutter–free styles of the 1990’s the interior style of the recent decade is evolving into increasingly layered and eclectic designs. Vintage and nostalgia are still key influences, but we seem to be seeing a divergence within these sectors. On the one hand we are seeing upholstered chairs and sofas covered with heirloom fabrics, such as tapestries, samplers and clothing, combined with hand-knitted/hand-crafted pieces to give a homespun vintage feel to them. On the other hand, we are seeing a classically English motifs such as cupcakes, teapots and roses being interpreted in a contemporary way, evoking a feeling of romantic nostalgia.

The recent graduate show at the Winchester School of Art, showcased a wealth of talented textile and print designers, with students managing to balance strong commercial awareness, but still pushing the boundaries of existing trends. The blurring of lines between interior design, fashion and fine art continues, as each discipline re-interprets established boundaries and morph into one another.

A key star of the show was Deryn Relph, with upholstery and accessories in awe inspiring combinations of magenta, fuchsia, pistachio and orange. The use of contemporary fabrics with knitted pieces, created a vintage style, that was still fresh and contemporary, yet commercially viable.

Classic English Country House

Classic english country style is a combination of different layers of styles, encompassing influences from colonial history, China and India. The paisley motifs and enlarged chrysanthemums are both symbols steeped in asian history, and are used in many different ways in english country house decoration.

These images from William Yeoward epitomise the english country house style, reinterpreted in a contemporary way. Exquisite fabrics are combined with elegant hand made cabinetry and accessories to complete the scheme. Sourcing the right kind of fireplace is key to defining the particular style of a room. The kinetic light offered by a fire is often a focal point, and careful thought should be given to the design.

These beautiful designs by Kal Fires can incorporate other functions, such as display alcoves and audio-visual systems by designing additional bespoke cabinetry. They work particularly well in contemporary interiors, and a variety of materials can be used to create wonderful compositions. Our clients often ask us to source contemporary lighting which is large scale and dramatic, without being the usual traditional tiered chandelier. These products are from Tigermoth Lighting, who produce modern pieces made from silver chains and suspended crystals in shades of amber and amethyst.

Both of these pieces work well in hallways and stairwells, and create drama and a focal point above a dining table. We often surround these signature pieces with a circle of inset directional down lighters to add another layer of light.

Continuing our theme of following boutique hotel styling around the world, the Screen Hotel in Kyoto, Japan is reinventing the traditional japanese ryokan (inn) style. The hotel calls itself a Personalized Boutique Hotel, with 13 rooms created by 13 different designers, allowing guests to choose the decor which suits their current mood.

Lizzie MacKellar is a Winchester based artist, and takes her inspiration from the beautiful hampshire countryside. We call her work abstract naturalism, and any of these works would be wonderful in any classic or contemporary interior.

Boutique Hotel Design Influences

Getting all visual...

Communicating a design to a client can be one of the most challenging aspects of the interior design process, and using floor plans and sketches can only communicate a certain amount of information. When specific and scaled detail is required, we can provide photo realistic drawings of how a room or space will look before the design is signed off and implemented.

The top left hand drawing is of the honeymoon suite at Wasing Park, and was shown to clients as a marketing tool whilst the wedding and conference venue was being renovated to ensure the venue was pre-booked for months in advance prior to the launch date.

The second drawing is by Jarvis Design, and is a beautiful, yet functional rendering of an apartment. Using visuals with this level of detail allows the client and designer to discuss how the space is divided and ensure 'flow' between each room. It is much cheaper to change the design at this stage, rather than during the build stage, and expensive mistakes can be avoided.

Using this level of detail also allows interior design issues to be dealt with, in terms of furniture placement, lighting plans, anticipating delivery problems, natural light in each room, and so on. The apartment can also be seen as a coherent entity, and the design can be considered for the whole space rather than individual rooms.

Sourcing in Marrakech

Inspired by our recent sourcing trip to Marrakech, these beautiful ochre and saffron colours are an uplifting option for clients who are reluctant to step away from the neutral schemes which still seem to be ubiquitous at the moment. At Icon Interiors, we spend time sourcing different products from around the world, to add value to our clients. In Marrakech in particular, their specialist crafts of wooden marquetry accessories and passmenterie are amazing value, as well as metalwork, such as lanterns and leather accessories.

A good interior designer will give clients access to a whole new world of sourcing ideas and resources, and should always add value to the design process in terms of showing clients different products which are not available in the high street. At Icon Interiors, we try to offer our clients economic value also, and can manage to reduce margins by sourcing these products directly.

The Implementation Stage

Refurbishing a property or building a new home can be a stressful experience, and we can help a client manage this process. We offer a full Project Management Service to ensure the project runs on time and within budget.

Depending on the size of the project, the client may need a Site Manager to manage the many different contractors on site, ensure building materials arrive in good time, and monitor the quality of the work. The Site Manager is also the client’s independent representative on site and is the main point of contact for the client and the designer, which ensures all decisions are communicated and documented. Our Site Manager is a master carpenter, and has site management experience for managing residential and local authority building projects.

For larger projects, a Project Manager may also be required to co-ordinate with architects, structural engineers, and external counterparties. The Project Manager will work with the Site Manager to ensure the project remains on schedule and on budget. Our Project Manager holds a first class degree in Construction Management, and has experience in large commercial projects in the City of London, as well as high-end residential projects.

The Specification Stage

For larger refurbishment projects, further detailed specification may be required beyond the basic details in Design Stage 1. This may include detailed drawings for bespoke cabinetry, furniture design, original flooring design, bespoke lighting design, and so on. Contractors require detailed specifications for any bespoke item, and CAD drawings and a finishes schedule are require for each item, to ensure the client’s exact requirements are met.

If bespoke wallpapers or fabrics are being designed, visits to the workshops and samples will be created to ensure the final design is documented. Special artwork or photography commissions may also be ordered at this stage, and meeting with artists and photographers can be arranged.

Visuals

A 3D rendered drawing is often the most helpful tool to help communicate a design. The basic furniture layout plan from Design Stage 1 can be extruded and rendered in a photo-realistic way to show how the final design concept will look. These advanced drawings can show how a space flows from one room to another. Alternatively, a specific detail of the design, such as bespoke furniture, can be visualized in 3D to confirm the design choices.

When designing a boutique hotel or show house, these rendered drawings are essential for client marketing purposes to encourage advance bookings and/or purchases prior to the project being finished.

The Design Stage

Our main objective is for our client to live or work in a beautiful space, and good design ensures budgets are allocated for maximum effect. The finished design should reflect the client’s needs and personal style – not the interior designer's!

We take a detailed Brief from the client, and discuss the Budget to be allocated to the project. Once our Fee Proposal is agreed, we Survey the site and produce floor plans and elevations for each room.

Having assessed the space, the Creative process can begin, and we like to involve the client as much as possible by holding regular meetings and arranging Sourcing trips.

As the design emerges, we produce a Mood Board to show how the design has been inspired. Samples of fabrics, flooring, and wall finishes will be collated as required. A product list will also be provided, which confirms the Detail of each item specified, including supplier, product codes and prices. The Design information is then presented to client, who now has a fully detailed bespoke design which is ready for implementation.

Getting a bit practical...

When managing an interior design project, the creative element of the process is only a small part of the work involved. We spend most of our time on project management, and this part of the process can is crucial to a successful outcome and a happy client.

We approach our projects in an analytical way, and divide the process into 3 Steps:

Step 1 - Design

After carefully defining the client brief and budget, we survey the space and begin the creative process and the design begins to evolve. A mood board or presentation will be created to shwo the design inspiration, proudcts will be sourced and sam-ples collected to add detail to the design.

Step 2 - Specify

For larger projects, a more detailed specification may be required. This may include photo-realistic visuals of how the completed design will look, CAD drawings for bespoke furniture, and detailed finishes schedules for flooring, walls, windows, lighitng, joinery, fabric and artwork.

Step 3 - Implementation

At this stage, our site manage will produce a work schedule, goods are ordered, contractors are appointed. the project is coordinated and finishes are monitored to ensure the smooth handover of a beautifully designed space.

Modern Modernists?

In the high end furniture market, the trend for contemporary furniture seems to be taking on a modernist twist, with more than a nod to the design values of Eileen Grey. These occasional tables and wine rack are by Anna Casa Interiors, who specialise in showcasing international contemporary designers in the showroom at Chelsea Harbour.

A touch of 1920/30's Hollywood glamour can also be added by teaming the glass furniture with exquisitely upholstered oval backed chairs, and high gloss lacquer macassar ebony cabinetry. Lighting is given a 21st century edge by overscaling products, and playing around with proportion to create a dramatic focal point.

The scheme can be softened by introducing bespoke rugs, designed around the modernist theme, and artwork can be commissioned to ensure a coherent design.

As a feature wall, they give depth and texture to any design scheme. They are available in a variety of shades, but the peacock blue and deep scarlet are the most impressive, as the clarity of colour and natural silk texture add luxury to any interior. The red silk in particular looks amazing in a glamorous dining room, and the peacock blue looks fantastic in entrance halls and bedrooms.

Silk wallpapers also work well in both contemporary and classical interiors, and we have installed them in docklands townhouses as well as Robert Adam grade 1 listed apartments.

We have also specfiied them for commercial interiors as they are surprisingly robust, and high-end property developers use them as feature walls in bedrooms to differentiate their show homes from the standard house builders.

For a more neutral scheme, opt for the natural tones of taupe and dove grey - we have used the taupe silk on large chimney areas, teamed with fired earth wax myrtle paint. The dove grey silk works beautifully in a master bedroom, with silk curtains and crystal beading.

Garden Rooms

Continuing our theme of indoor/outdoor space, the current trend of 'outdoor rooms' remains a key design focus for this year. The products available for outdoor furniture ranges from the inexpensive garden furniture to high budget items such as external fireplaces.

The key to selecting the right product is to understand the wear and tear on such items - the items in question must look good for years to come, so permanent fixtures (such as fireplaces and seating) should be considered as high investment products that you will be happy to live with from year to year. Accessories such as scatter cushions, candle holders etc can be lower budget items, which can be changed frequently to introduce different accent colours.

For modern gardens, contemporary furniture ranges are available, which are very different from the traditional teak garden furniture. Using commerical/industrial styling, these products are reminiscent of boutique hotel styling. Seat cushions and sun bed cushions should be in weather proof fabrics, such as the Sunbrella brand, or can be sourced from several ranges by Sacho Hesslein.

Integrating Indoor and Outdoor Space

With obvious classical references, each piece also stands as an original work of garden art, and will work in both small and large gardens to create a focal point of interest, and draw the eye towards a point in the garden to create a sense of journey.

When considering such important pieces, it is vital to consider lighting prior to installation. Lighting will create drama and enhance the sculpture, giving the garden life after dark. Design in a Gift Box?

We are often asked by developers and property investors to design a furniture and soft furnishings 'package' for show homes and buy to let properties. These design schemes work particularly well when teamed with hand made bespoke soft furnishings, which finish off the design beautifully, rather than the standard show home finish. As the design is confined to a specific budget, every piece of furniture and each accessory is itemised and this design 'package' is signed off by the developer or investor prior to installation. Once we have received sign-off, we then can order the goods and install the furniture and soft furnishings. The lead time can be anything from 1 week to 1 month, depending on schedules.

This design package idea is also available as a Gift Box, and is a wonderful wedding present for young couples, or a moving in present for sons or daughters who are buying their first home. This Gift Box idea may also suit young professionals who are cash rich and time poor, who just need to have a flat fitted and furnished as quickly as possible.

Bespoke Artworks

As part of our interior design process, we also design and specify artworks for clients. Because artwork choices can be very personal to each member of the household, we spend a lot of time with our clients to determine the exact nature of the work they are seeking.

For a modern decorative canvass, prices can range from £750 upwards, and colours can be designed around existing accessories and furniture. These canvasses can also be specified for commercial spaces and developments. This tryptich was designed to work with a client's existing decorative scheme.

For clients interested in investing in commissions by specialist painters, we can source artists to add to your collection of existing pieces, or source new artists to compliment your collection.

Traditional or Contemporary?

Our product focus today is on Cole & Son wallpapers. Established in 1873, the Cole & Son archive consists of approximately 1,800 block print designs, 350 screenprint designs and a huge quantity of original drawings and wallpapers, representing all the styles from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

Amongst these are some of the most important historic wallpaper designs in the world. Coles is now the prime source for entirely authentic period wallpapers printed by the original method and has provided wallpapers for many historic houses, including Buckingham Palace and the White House.

The magnificent archive is the major source of all Cole’s new collections, and designs are re-interpreted in both pattern and proportion to retain the original character, but add a contemporary edge.

These wallpapers also work particularly well in modern homes, which are a blank canvas, as they help to add depth and character to any decoration scheme.

Kitchens to die for...

These beautiful hand made kitchens work in both traditional and contemporary interiors, as they can be styled using traditional hand turned wooden bun style knobs, or with sleek nickel handles. A classic Aga can be slotted into a mock chimney breast to define the classic country house kitchen style, or an industrial-style commercial range cooker will bring the look straight up to date.

Choosing taps and sinks will also define your style, and traditional brassware with a butler's sink would work beautifully with an Aga. Alternatively, sleek architectural taps with specialist shower attachments can be a wonderful focal point, and can be teamed with flush under-mounted stainless sinks for a contemporary style.

These bespoke rugs are designed by Esti Barnes of Top Floor Rugs - which has become a leading source for distinctive contemporary hand-made rugs and carpets.

This 'Effervescence' rug ties together this contemporary scheme, with an accent colour of bold orange being used in for the lamps. Otherwise, the scheme is decidedly neutral, showing how one signature piece can define a whole style.

Top Floor's rug collections are created by founder and Design Director, Esti Barnes who also designs bespoke rugs and carpets for residential and commercial clients. Rugs can be customised, including choice of colours, combinations of wool and silk, and some of the designs are woven with silver and copper threads.

The company's products have won numerous awards including Winner, British Design of the Year 2008 ('ESQUIRE' rug) Elle Decoration UK, October 2008.

Our product focus today is on specialist cabinet-makers - this wonderful games table was made by Simon Owen to a client's bespoke design. Made in walnut with faux ebony and sycamore inlays, this unusal piece cannot be found on the high street.

The drawers have beautiful dove-tail joints, and on closer examination, each drawer slides effortlessly into the cabinetry.

Each walnut veneer is carefully selected to match perfectly, and the give the desired pattern and effect.

Simon is available for commissions for bespoke joinery and furniture, and can visit you at home to discuss your design requirements. We are particularly interested in using Simon's skills when replicating an existing piece of antique furniture, when a matching pair is required.

Oak panelling for libraries and entrance halls can also be designed to enhance any residential home.

Natural Swimming Pools

Inspired by our beautiful April weather today, I thought I would write about natural swimming pools. A natural swimming pool will blend into the landscape seamlessly.

These stunning swimming pools are design by Woodhouse Natural Pools - their portfolio on www.naturalswimmingpools.com. Again the style can be defined as traditional or contemporary depending on the type of garden design chosen or how the pool is styled and accessorized. A natural pool can be accompanied by traditional buildings such as thatched gazebos, or teamed with contemporary wood and glass structures in with an essence of harmonious oriental design.

Specialist fabrics should be used for pool furniture, but don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. There is a range of zingy citrus colours by Sacho Hesslein which are designed specifically for pool and spa areas, and would work beautifully in a modern, family pool area. Other brands such as Sunbrella have a range of fabrics for outdoor and marine use.

A Little Bit of Vintage??

We are often asked "What is your signature style?", and I spend much of my time explaining to clients that they are asking the wrong question...as interior designers, we don't simply waltz into your personal space and tell you what scheme would work best for you. We spend the first stage of the design process assessing the needs of you and your family, understanding the space and architecture of your home, and working out how you live and function in a space. All of those elements must be considered before the creative part of the process can begin.

As you can see on our website - http://www.icon-interiors.co.uk/ - much of our portfolio and styling is classic/contemporary in style, but that just happens to have been appropriate for the kind of clients we have had over the last few years. I have a secret confession to make...yes, I like colour and I like traditional styling! I particularly enjoy researching products for historic buildings, and using traditional fabrics and finishes in contemporary ways.

These beautiful wallpapers and fabrics from Brian Yates tie into the whole vintage trend, and go against every 'neutral' tendency we have to play it safe. They can be used as a feature wall in sitting rooms with simple cream upholstery, accessorised with scatter cushions in vintage embroidered style.

Use an eclectic mix of colonial style furniture, such as indian mirrors and bleached oak tables to add authenticity to this look.

This look can also work in a much more pared down colour palette, such as natural taupes and dove greys and would work well with crisp white linens in a bedroom or holiday home. Teamed with inlaid pearl furniture from Graham and Greene, this would create a stunning colonial scheme.

For those parents who can't bear the whole princess theme for their little girls, this vintage styling can also work well for children's rooms, giving parents the scope to refine the style as children grow.

LIGHTING DESIGN

When considering re-designing a room, an essential part of the process is the lighting plan. However much budget is allocated to furniture and soft furnishings, if they are not lit correctly, money will be wasted.

Lighting should be layered, and consideration should be given to ambient, task, decorative and kinetic light. Specialist lighting designers such as John Cullen Lighting (see images) design ambient lighting schemes for all budgets.

At Icon, we always ensure our lighting designs incorporate ceiling mounted down lighters, angled around the perimeter of each ceiling to accentuate the silk wallpaper and artworks. We also ensure we highlight bespoke furnishings and window treatments with directional down lighters.

These ambient lighting schemes should also be layered with decorative signature lighting. This Paradise Plafonnier decorative light by Bella Figura has been specified for our client as a focal point above a dining table. A signature pendant or contemporary chandelier can also define an area within a large space.

Bespoke Flooring

Our product focus today is bespoke flooring, and Weldon flooring specialise in wooden floors inlaid with marquetry and parquetry.

These beautiful floors are to be found in Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, but scaled down designs will also suit a residential interior. We have just specified the starburst marquetry motif for a client's entrance hall, and have designed intertwined initials to personalise the design.

These classical designs are timeless, and work beautifully with other textures, and we have teamed this walnut flooring with silk wallpaper and sentousai tiles sourced from Japan, to enhance the classic/contemporary style.

Furniture sourced from the Linley Helix range compliment this flooring, and ensures the design is coherent throughout the apartment. Bespoke carpets in silk and bamboo were used in the bedrooms to soften the scheme.

Having lived and worked in Asia, we always look for inspiration from our travels, and the holy trinity of aesthetics, balance and proportion are ever present in oriental design. This Kelly Hoppen interior (far left) shows how asian design can be used in a contemporary way.

Our product focus this month is sourcing beautiful doors and door furniture. We are currently designing contemporary walnut doors with sleek nickel handles, and these important (usually forgotten) elements ensure our design is finely detailed to give a contemporary but well-crafted feel to the design. The veneers are hand selected by our clients, and are chosen to work with other cabinetry.

Continuing our exotic theme, we also love opening up space by adding these beautiful shoji-style doors. Often clients want all of the benefits of open plan, but the flexibility to close-off rooms and change their home space. These shoji-style doors work well with integrated kitchen/dining/living spaces. Their simple design and bespoke joinery ensures that they work well with our beautiful hand crafted kitchens, as well as sleek Bulthaup-styled spaces.

Icon Interiors was founded in 2003 when Tracy Leach, tired from working as a foreign exchange dealer for JP Morgan, decided to turn her hand to interiors. After studying interior design in London, Icon Interiors was born. Good Design is Good Business

Icon Interiors is delighted to announce that their client Wasing Estate, Aldermaston, Berkshire, was recently voted Regional Winner of the South of England, Countryside Alliance Award for Best Rural Enterprise 2009. Nicknamed the “Rural Oscars”, the Countryside Alliance runs the competition in response to the growing awareness that putting money into the local economy is critical to the fabric of rural life. Tracy Leach of Icon Interiors worked with the owner of Wasing Estate to source antique furniture from Bali, which ensures this historic wedding and conference venue offers beautifully styled reception barns and accommodation.

Completing the interior design of Wasing Park, Aldermaston in July 2008 with its eclectic mix of Balinese and colonial-style furniture, has ensured that this wedding and conference centre is successfully taking bookings as far as 2010 and even 2011.

Icon Interiors worked closely with the owner of Wasing Park, Joshua Dugdale, to source authentic Balinese furniture, by visiting companies in Denpasar, Bali and scouring antique warehouses in the foot hills around the capital. The furniture arrived in the UK by containers, and the Icon team managed to meet a tight deadline and have the 11 bedroom hotel ready for its first wedding in July 2008.

“Visiting Bali with the hotel owner was a wonderful opportunity to ensure Icon Interiors exactly met the client’s vision for his hotel. As his family estate, Mr Dugdale was very keen to respect the traditional nature of the estate buildings, but also to add an eclectic touch by using Balinese artefacts to personalise each bedroom” explains Tracy Leach, Interior Designer at Icon Interiors.
